A made-to-measure book

A name that means “praised”: storybooks starring Muhammad

Muhammad comes from the Arabic root ḥ-m-d, “praise”, and in recent years it has been the most frequently registered boy’s name in England and Wales. Here it goes one step further — onto the cover and into every chapter of a story built around your own Muhammad.

Why a story with Muhammad in it

Muhammad is a name children hear constantly — at school there may be two or three of them in the same year group, often told apart by a surname initial or a nickname. A book is one of the few places where the name belongs to just one boy. On the cover it stands first, in large type, and inside the story it is spoken in full, the way family members say it when they mean it: Muhammad climbs, Muhammad decides, Muhammad finds the way home.

The name has a strong, even rhythm in English — three syllables, mu-HAM-mad, with the weight in the middle — so it carries well when a story is read aloud at bedtime. It also has a gentle meaning to lean on: a boy who is “praised” and “praiseworthy” makes a natural hero for a tale about kindness, courage or a clever idea that works. If your family uses Mo or another short form at home, the story can still keep the full name for the big moments and the title.

Origin, meaning and popularity

Muhammad is Arabic and is formed from the root ḥ-m-d, which carries the idea of praise. The same root gives a whole family of related names — Ahmad, Mahmoud, Hamid and Hamdan among them — so in many households the name sits alongside cousins and uncles whose names echo it. Muhammad itself means “the praised one” or “worthy of praise”.

For Muslims it is the name of the Prophet, which is why it is given so widely and with such affection across the Arab world, South Asia, Turkey, Iran, Africa and Muslim communities in Britain. Because Arabic is written in its own script, the name reaches English in several spellings: Muhammad, Mohammed, Mohammad, Muhammed and Mohamed are all common, and official statistics usually count each one separately. Even so, the spelling Muhammad alone has topped the Office for National Statistics list of baby boys’ names in England and Wales in recent years, ahead of names such as Noah and Oliver.

In Pakistani and Indian families the name is often the first part of a compound — Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Yusuf, Muhammad Ibrahim — and the boy may be called by the second part in everyday life. In Turkey the traditional form is Mehmet, and in parts of West Africa you will hear Mamadou. There is no single fixed name day for Muhammad; the name is celebrated through the person rather than a calendar date.

Short forms and ways of saying it

  • Mo — The most common British short form — quick to shout across a playground or a football pitch, and familiar to most children.
  • Moe — A spelling of the same nickname that some families prefer; it reads a little softer on a card or a lunchbox label.
  • Hamoudi — A warm Arabic diminutive, especially in Levantine and Gulf families — the kind of name grandparents use for a small boy.
  • Hamouda — Another affectionate Arabic pet form, heard particularly in Egypt and North Africa.
  • Mamad — A familiar Persian shortening used in Iranian families, often for a young child.
  • Muhammad in full — Many families prefer to keep the full name out of respect, using it every day rather than shortening it at all.

Over 2,500 books starring their very own hero

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction

Most asked questions

Use exactly the spelling on your child’s birth certificate or the one your family writes. The book prints the name as you type it, so Muhammad, Mohammed or any other spelling appears on the cover and in the story just as you enter it.
