A made-to-measure book

Nora means 'honour' in its Irish root and 'light' in its Arabic one — two traditions arrived at the same small name

Few names carry two meanings this good at once. Nora is what Irish families made of Honora, 'honour', and what Arabic families hear in Nura, 'light' — and either way it fits a book cover as if it were designed for one. On this page, Nora isn't the reader. She's the hero.

Here's how a book for Nora could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

A cover was always coming for Nora

Some names have to grow into print; Nora has been in it for a century and a half. Ibsen put a Nora at the centre of A Doll's House in 1879, and she became the most argued-about heroine of the modern stage. Nora Ephron wrote her way through Hollywood, Nora Roberts has filled whole shelves of bookshops, and between them they have kept the name on spines, playbills and title cards for generations. It is, in other words, a name with form: publishers and printers have long known it looks right in a title. What has never existed is a book where that title belongs to your Nora — her name set large on the cover, her likeness in the illustrations drawn from a single photo, and a story underneath in which she isn't reading about someone else's adventure but leading her own. The name earns its place typographically, too. A strong N to open, an open -a to close, two even syllables in between: Nora reads clearly across a bookshop table and rolls easily off a tired parent's tongue at half past seven. That matters, because a bedtime book spends most of its life being read aloud — and the hero's name gets said more often than any other word in it.

Where Nora comes from — and how far it has travelled

Nora took two independent roads to your daughter. In Ireland it began as a short form of Honora, from the Latin honor — 'honour' — and grew so confident that it stopped being a nickname centuries ago and became a name in its own right; it does the same everyday duty for Eleanora and Leonora. Separately, in the Arabic-speaking world, Nura — from nur, 'light' — produced the same warm sound with a meaning all its own. A girl called Nora can fairly claim either inheritance, or both: honour and light are not a bad pair of things to be named for. The double origin shows on the map. Nora has spent much of the last fifteen years among Norway's most-given girls' names — repeatedly the most given of all — while climbing into the American top thirty and holding steady in the Netherlands, Belgium and the German-speaking countries. It is that rare thing, a genuinely international name that never sounds imported: as much at home in Oslo as in Dublin, Cairo or Ohio. And it has aged without dating — the Noras of 1900 and the Noras of today share it comfortably, which is exactly what you want from a name that will one day belong to a grown woman as well as to the girl on this cover. The spelling Norah, with its quiet final h, is the same name in slightly more formal dress; Norah Jones wears it that way.

What a Nora gets called at home

Nora is already short, so its pet names are less about trimming and more about warmth — most of them add a syllable of affection rather than take one away. These are the forms English-speaking families actually use.

  • Nora — The everyday form and the Sunday form in one — many families never need anything shorter, which is exactly why it sits so well printed on a spine.
  • Norie — The classic bedtime diminutive — soft enough for a lullaby, and usually the version grandparents settle on first.
  • NoNo — What many a Nora calls herself before the r arrives — a toddler-era name that tends to survive in family legend long after she can pronounce her own.
  • Eleanora or Honora — The long forms held in reserve. Some families like having a formal flourish for certificates and christenings, knowing that at home she will always be Nora.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction

Most asked questions

All the way through. The story is written in English from scratch around the characters you create, so Nora turns up in the narration and the dialogue the way she would in any picture book — as a name, not as a pasted-in blank.
