A made-to-measure book
Pop, Pops or Poppet? However you say Poppy, the story is hers
Poppy is a name you can hear across a park: two bright P's, a bounce in the middle and a red flower behind it. Here it goes on the cover and into every page of a story where she is the one who saves the day.

Why Poppy works so well on a cover
Some names sit quietly in a sentence. Poppy doesn't. It is short, it starts and ends on a strong sound, and the double P in the middle makes it pop — which is, of course, half the joke of the word. Read aloud, "Poppy, look out!" or "Poppy grabbed the wand" lands with a little thump that keeps small listeners leaning in.
That matters in a book written around her. The story uses her name the way a narrator would: when she makes a decision, when somebody calls for help, when the last page turns. Because Poppy is only two syllables, it never slows a line down, and it fits neatly on a cover title without being squeezed or split.
There is also something fitting about a girl named after a wildflower being the hero. Poppies are not delicate hothouse blooms — they turn up uninvited on field edges, railway banks and disturbed ground, and they are impossible to miss once they open. A story where Poppy steps forward, cape on and chin up, suits the name rather well.
The sample covers above show a few directions her story could take. On a garden wall at dusk, the cape and the name do the same job: both announce that someone small is about to be very brave. In a park with her best friend, Poppy is the one with an arm around a shoulder — the name sounds warm said by another child. On a pale alien plain with a rocket behind her, a flower name among the stars has a nice contrast to it, a bit of Earth carried somewhere new. And in a clearing full of golden sparks, Poppy is short enough to be the word a spell ends on.
Where the name Poppy comes from
Poppy is one of the plant names, straight from the English word for the flower. The word goes back to Old English popæg, which itself comes from the Latin papaver — the name botanists still use for the poppy genus today. So unlike many names that travelled through several languages and changed meaning on the way, Poppy has meant exactly one thing for over a thousand years: the red flower.
In Britain the flower carries a second, deeper meaning. After the First World War, the red poppies that grew on the battlefields of Flanders became the symbol of remembrance, made famous by John McCrae's 1915 poem "In Flanders Fields". Every November the paper poppy appears on coats across the country. For many families the name quietly holds both things at once: a cheerful summer flower and a sign of care and memory. Some parents choose it for a November birthday, or because a great-grandparent served; others simply love the colour.
The name was used in Victorian and Edwardian times along with other flower names, then faded for much of the twentieth century. Its comeback belongs to the wider return of short, sunny botanical names in Britain, and in England and Wales it was fast: from a rare choice it climbed through the 2000s and spent much of the 2010s in or around the top ten for girls. It is still a familiar, well-loved name in British classrooms — common enough that nobody misspells it, distinctive enough to feel bright.
Part of its charm is that it sounds young without sounding invented: it has a long history in English, yet it never feels formal or stiff. A Poppy at six and a Poppy at sixty both seem perfectly natural.
There is no fixed name day for Poppy in the calendar, so her big day in the book is simply the one you give it.
Nicknames and ways to call Poppy
- Poppy — The full name is already friendly, so it's what most people use every day — at school, at the door, on the cover.
- Pop — The quick one-syllable version shouted across a playground or a busy kitchen.
- Pops — A playful, slightly cheeky form that siblings and grandparents tend to grab.
- Poppet — An old British term of endearment meaning a little darling; with this name it feels almost made to measure.
- Poppy-seed — A tiny-person nickname for babies and toddlers, often outgrown and then remembered fondly.
- Popsicle — More common in American households, used teasingly, usually on hot days or by an older brother or sister.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is beautiful and my granddaughter is happy with it.
We are satisfied, my little boy really liked the book too. :)
The book and the audiobook are both great. Minor imperfections were willingly and immediately fixed to my satisfaction. I will definitely buy another one, and I have also recommended it to others..
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.
FAQ

Most asked questions
Poppy is short and punchy, so it reads cleanly in dialogue and on a cover. The flower it comes from is famous for appearing boldly in unexpected places, which is not a bad description of a storybook hero.
