A made-to-measure book
Florence means “in bloom” — so let her story open like one
Florence comes from the Latin word for flourishing, travelled to England through an Italian city and a famous nurse, and now answers to Flossie at the breakfast table. A personalised book can carry all three: the full name on the cover, the pet name inside, and a story built around one girl.

Why a book with Florence on the cover
Florence is a name with three syllables in its long form and a dozen shorter ones in daily use, and a story can make room for all of them. On the cover it stands in full — Florence — the way it looks on a library card or a school certificate, which is exactly the version a child starts to recognise as her own written word. Inside, the narrator can slip into Flossie or Flo when the scene turns warm or funny, the way grown-ups at home actually talk to her.
The name also suits being said aloud. “Florence” ends on a soft hiss rather than a hard stop, so it sits comfortably in the middle of a sentence read at bedtime: “Florence tiptoed past the sleeping dragon” runs smoothly in a way that names ending in a clipped consonant do not. And because the name literally means blooming, a story about growing braver, cleverer or kinder has a quiet echo of the name itself — something a parent can point out years later, when she asks what her name means.
There is a practical side too. Florence is a name children are often asked to spell, and a beginner reader who meets the full eight letters again and again — on the cover, on the title page, at the start of every chapter — learns to pick it out of a page long before she can read the words around it. Seeing it in print, in a book that is plainly about her, is a small and real kind of pride. And because so many Florences shorten their name the moment they start school, a story that uses both the formal and the familiar version shows her that each of them belongs to her.
The hero in the illustrations is drawn from a photo you upload, so the girl on the page has her hair, her smile and her expression rather than a stock face. The name and the likeness together are what make it Florence's book rather than a book with a sticker in it.
Where the name Florence comes from
Florence goes back to the Latin florens, “blossoming” or “flourishing”, and to the Roman names Florentius and Florentia built from it. In medieval England it was not strictly a girl's name at all: it was given to boys as well, and one of the best-known English chroniclers of the twelfth century was a monk remembered as Florence of Worcester.
The modern girl's name owes almost everything to one person. Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in the Italian city of Florence — Firenze — and her parents simply named her after it (her elder sister was named Parthenope, after the old Greek name for Naples, where she had been born). When Nightingale became a national figure after the Crimean War, thousands of British parents named their daughters after her, and Florence turned into one of the defining names of the Victorian and Edwardian nursery.
Like many names of that era, it then faded for most of the twentieth century and came to sound like a great-grandmother's name. Since the 2000s it has made a strong comeback in England and Wales, carried by the same wave of affection for vintage names that brought back other old favourites, and helped along by well-known Florences in music and film. Today it reads as both classic and fresh: familiar to grandparents, new to the playground. That double life is part of its charm in a story: a heroine called Florence can be the sensible one who reads the map, or the one who climbs the tree first, and the name fits both.
The city connection still colours the name, too. Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance, of painters, sculptors and inventors, so a Florence who builds a robot out of spare parts or paints a whole new world is, in a small way, living up to where her name came from. A parent choosing the plot can lean into that — a story about making, drawing or discovering suits this name especially well.
There is no fixed name day for Florence in the calendar we use, so the book does not tie her to a date — her birthday remains the obvious moment to give it.
Flossie, Flo and the other ways to say Florence
- Florence — The full name — on the cover, on the dedication page and in moments when the story wants her to sound grown-up and determined.
- Flossie — The cosy Victorian pet form, back in fashion along with the name itself; perfect for cuddles, giggles and the happy ending.
- Flo — Short, quick and sporty — the version friends shout across a park or a classroom, and a good fit for adventure scenes.
- Florrie — An old London and northern English favourite with a music-hall sparkle; affectionate and a little cheeky.
- Floss — A brisk, modern nickname that older girls often choose for themselves when Flossie starts to feel too babyish.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is beautiful and my granddaughter is happy with it.
We are satisfied, my little boy really liked the book too. :)
The book and the audiobook are both great. Minor imperfections were willingly and immediately fixed to my satisfaction. I will definitely buy another one, and I have also recommended it to others..
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.
