A made-to-measure book
A book for Isla — the name with a silent S and an island behind it
Isla is short, soft and Scottish to its roots: two syllables, "EYE-la", borrowed from a Hebridean island. Here's where the name comes from, the pet names families really use, and four story covers with Isla right in the title.

Here's how a book for Isla could look
Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.
The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.
Why Isla works so well on a cover
Isla is one of those names that looks different from how it sounds. The S is silent, so it's "EYE-la", never "IZ-la" — and plenty of children called Isla spend their first school years gently correcting supply teachers. A book is one place where that never happens. The story is written with her name already in it, and every time a grown-up reads it aloud, the right sound comes out because the rhythm of the sentence carries it.
It also suits a title. Four letters, two open vowels, no awkward consonant clusters: "Isla and the Fox at the Forest Edge" rolls off the tongue in a way longer names struggle to. On the cover it sits in large letters without crowding the picture, and inside the book it slips into dialogue naturally — "Come on, Isla!" works whether someone is shouting across a football pitch or whispering in a dark workshop.
Because Isla is a name with a place behind it, it also gives a story somewhere to start. A girl named after a windswept island off the west coast of Scotland is easy to imagine as the kind of hero who walks out along a path at dawn just to see where it goes.
The silent S matters for early readers, too. Isla is often one of the first words a child learns to recognise rather than sound out, precisely because phonics would lead her astray. Seeing it printed again and again on real pages — in speech bubbles of sorts, in the middle of sentences, at the start of a chapter — helps fix that shape in her mind. Many children called Isla can spot their name in a line of text long before they can read the words around it, and a book built around her gives that small skill something to do.
Where the name Isla comes from
Isla comes from Islay, the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides — in Scottish Gaelic, Ìle. The island's name is old and its meaning isn't settled; it has been linked to a personal name and to Norse and pre-Gaelic roots, but nobody can say for certain. What is certain is the pronunciation: islanders say "EYE-la", and the name Isla simply spells it the way it sounds. Scotland also has two rivers called the Isla, one flowing through Angus and Perthshire and another in Moray, so the name has always had a watery, landscape feel to it.
People often connect Isla with the Spanish word isla, meaning "island". It's a coincidence rather than a shared origin — the Spanish word is pronounced "EES-la" — but it's a happy one, since the Scottish name really does come from an island.
For most of the twentieth century Isla was a quiet, distinctly Scottish choice. That changed around the turn of the millennium. The name climbed steadily in Scotland until it was among the most popular names for baby girls there, and in England and Wales it rose into the top ten during the 2010s. Today it's familiar in every British classroom, yet it still carries that hint of sea air and heather that sets it apart from names that are popular simply because they sound pretty.
Islay itself is a place of peat bogs, long sandy bays, lighthouses and huge flocks of barnacle geese that arrive every autumn from Greenland. None of that is in the name's meaning, strictly speaking, but it's the picture many Scottish families have in mind when they choose it, and it's a rich one for a children's story: tides, seals on the rocks, a storm rolling in off the Atlantic.
The spelling is worth knowing about. Isla is by far the usual form, but you'll occasionally meet Islay used as a girl's name too, kept identical to the island. Some parents choose Isla partly because it can't really be shortened or misheard as anything else once people know the rule about the S — and partly because it works equally well for a toddler and for a grown woman signing an email.
Nicknames and ways to call Isla
- Isla — Most families use the full name every day — it's already short, so there's little to trim. In the book she's Isla throughout.
- Issy or Izzy — A playful nickname some siblings land on, even though it borrows the S the full name keeps silent.
- Lala — A toddler favourite, often born when a younger brother or sister first tries to say "Isla" and only the second half comes out.
- Isla-bug, Isla-belle — Affectionate home-made versions for bedtime and cuddles, rarely heard outside the family.
- Isla-Rose, Isla-Mae, Isla-Grace — Double-barrelled combinations are especially common with Isla, because a short two-syllable name pairs easily with a one-syllable middle name. If your Isla goes by the longer form, that can be the name on the cover too.
- Isla Bean, Isla-loo — Silly, rhyming versions that tend to appear in family songs and games — the kind of name a grandparent uses that nobody else is allowed to.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is beautiful and my granddaughter is happy with it.
We are satisfied, my little boy really liked the book too. :)
The book and the audiobook are both great. Minor imperfections were willingly and immediately fixed to my satisfaction. I will definitely buy another one, and I have also recommended it to others..
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.

Isla is pronounced "EYE-la", with a silent S, after the Scottish island of Islay. The story is written in English with Isla's name in it from the start, so it reads naturally aloud — the spelling on the page is exactly the one you enter.
