Ivy: the evergreen name that climbed back from Victorian England

Ivy is short, green and stubborn in the best way: a plant that keeps its leaves through winter, a name that was fashionable when your great-great-grandmother was a girl, and one that British parents have brought firmly back. Here is where it comes from, how it is shortened, and why it sits so well on the cover of a story.

Why a book with Ivy in it reads so well

Ivy is one of the shortest girls' names in use in Britain: three letters, two syllables, no silent letters and nothing to misspell. A child who is just starting to read can find her own name on a page long before she can manage the rest of the sentence, and with Ivy that moment comes early. The capital I standing alone at the start makes it easy to spot in a block of text, and the soft ending keeps it gentle when it is read aloud at bedtime.

On a cover the shortness pays off too. A long name has to be squeezed onto the title line; Ivy can be set big and bold, with plenty of space left for the rest of the title. And because the story is written directly in English rather than translated, the name never gets bent into a form that sounds wrong – it is Ivy who kicks the ball, Ivy who takes the first step down the path, Ivy who finishes the robot.

There is also something fitting about the meaning. Ivy is the plant that holds on: it grips walls, climbs towards the light and stays green when everything around it has gone bare. That makes it a natural name for a heroine who keeps going when a story gets difficult, and the pictures and plots below lean into exactly that.

Where the name Ivy comes from

Ivy comes straight from the English word for the climbing plant, Hedera helix. The word itself is very old: Old English had ifig, and the plant was part of English life long before anyone thought of it as a name. It belongs to the wider family of botanical names that became popular in the second half of the nineteenth century, when Victorian parents fell in love with flowers, gemstones and plants as names for their daughters.

The plant carried a lot of meaning for them. Because ivy clings and never lets go, it stood for faithfulness and lasting affection, and it turned up on wedding stationery, mourning jewellery and Christmas decorations. Its place in the season is still familiar from the old carol The Holly and the Ivy, sung in British churches and schools every December – so many families with an Ivy find that her name comes up naturally in winter.

As a given name Ivy was widely used in England in the late Victorian and Edwardian years, then gradually fell out of fashion in the middle of the twentieth century, when it began to sound like a grandmother's name. That is precisely what brought it back. From the 2010s onwards, parents looking for something short, old-fashioned and nature-linked rediscovered it, and Ivy climbed quickly up the official lists for England and Wales, reaching the upper part of the top ten in recent years. It is now one of the clearest examples of a great-grandmother name that feels completely modern again.

Ivy has no fixed name day in the calendar we use, so there is no particular date to celebrate – but a winter birthday, with ivy on the mantelpiece, has an obvious charm.

Pet names and ways to say Ivy

  • Ivy — The full name is already so short that most families simply use it as it is, at school, at home and on the cover of a book.
  • Ives — A playful, slightly cheeky form that siblings and dads tend to invent; it works well when calling across a garden or a playground.
  • Vee — Taken from the second syllable, it is the kind of nickname close friends use, and it pops up as a child gets older.
  • Ivybug — A tender baby and toddler name, usually reserved for bedtime and cuddles rather than the school gate.
  • Ivy Leaf — A nature-flavoured nickname that plays on the plant itself; grandparents in particular like it, and it suits a story set outdoors.
  • Miss Ivy — Used half-jokingly when she is being very grown-up, or very bossy – and a nice form for a narrator to slip in at an exciting moment.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
