Freya: a name from Norse myth, ready to lead her own story

Freya means "lady" in Old Norse and was the name of a goddess with a falcon-feather cloak and a chariot pulled by cats. Give your Freya a personalised picture book where she is the hero, with her own name on the cover and her own face in the illustrations.

Why a book starring Freya

Few names arrive with as much backstory as Freya. Long before it turned up on nursery doors across Britain, it belonged to one of the most vivid figures in Norse myth: a goddess who rode in a chariot drawn by two great cats, owned a cloak of falcon feathers that let her fly, and wore a shining necklace called Brisingamen. That is a lot of adventure packed into five letters, and it makes Freya a natural fit for a book in which she is the one doing the brave things.

It also helps that Freya is short and sounds clear when read aloud. Two soft syllables, FRAY-uh, sit comfortably in the middle of a sentence, so when the story says "Freya pulled the cape tight and stepped up onto the wall", the name never trips the reader up. A child hears it at bedtime the same way she hears it at the school gate, and that familiar sound is exactly what makes her sit up when the hero on the page turns out to be her.

The name is printed on the cover and woven through every page, so her book doesn't feel like a story about some other girl that happens to share her name. Pick the plot she would choose herself, whether that is a caped rescue at dusk, a day out with her best friend, a morning on a farm or a night of spells, and Freya is the one at the centre of it.

There is a small bonus in a name with this much myth behind it: it gives a story somewhere to go. A girl who shares her name with someone who flew in a feathered cloak can be handed a cape, a wand or the keys to a tractor, and the leap feels natural rather than forced.

Where the name Freya comes from

Freya comes from Old Norse Freyja, usually explained as "lady" or "noblewoman". It is the feminine counterpart of Freyr, her twin brother in the myths, whose name means "lord". In the old stories Freyja ruled over love, beauty and fertility, but also over magic and battle: she was said to claim half of those who fell in war for her hall, Folkvangr. So the name carries both tenderness and toughness, which is a rare combination for a girl's name.

In Britain the name has deep roots in Shetland and Orkney, where Norse heritage runs strong and Freya was in use long before it became fashionable further south. From the 1990s onwards it spread across the rest of the UK, and it has spent years among the most popular girls' names in England, Wales and Scotland, regularly landing in the top ten. Despite that, it still feels a little wild and northern rather than ordinary.

You will also meet other spellings of the same name: Freyja keeps the Old Norse form, Freja is the usual spelling in Denmark and Sweden, and Freia is the version Wagner used in his opera Das Rheingold. The UK has largely settled on Freya, which is also the form we use on the cover.

There is one more everyday trace of the goddess. The Old English name for Friday, frigedaeg, honoured Frigg, a different goddess, but the two figures were often blurred together in later retellings, and plenty of people still repeat that Friday is "Freya's day". It is a nice detail to share with a child who already likes knowing that her name is older than the castle she visited on a school trip.

Nicknames and ways to say Freya

  • Freya — The full name works for every occasion, from the register at school to the title on the cover. It is already short, so many families never shorten it at all.
  • Frey — A quick, one-syllable version that friends and siblings tend to land on, especially when shouting across the playground.
  • Fray-Fray — A doubled, sing-song form that little brothers and sisters often invent before they can manage the full name.
  • Freya-bear — An affectionate pet name for cuddles and bedtime, the kind that only family is allowed to use.
  • Fifi — A playful nickname some families build from the initial F; it tends to stay at home rather than travel to school.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
