A made-to-measure book

Arthur, the name that arrives with its own legend

Few names carry a story before the child has said a word. Arthur brings swords, round tables and a thousand years of British storytelling — so it feels right that he gets a book where the adventure is finally about him.

Here's how a book for Arthur could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

Why Arthur suits a storybook so well

Arthur is one of the very few names that already lives inside stories. Say it aloud to a British child and somewhere in the background there is a castle, a sword in a stone and a table where nobody sits at the head. That is a lot to live up to — and a lot of fun to play with.

In his own book, Arthur doesn't have to pull anything out of a stone. He can score the goal that wins the match, steer a little digger across a building site or follow a brass compass through a canyon. The old legend stays in the background as a wink for the grown-ups, while the story belongs to the boy in the pictures, who looks like your Arthur because the illustrations are made from his photo.

The name also works beautifully on a page. Two clear syllables, a strong "AR" at the start and a soft "thur" at the end — it reads well on a cover, it holds up when a narrator says it in a tense moment ("Arthur, look out!") and it is short enough that a beginning reader spots it instantly among the other words. Many children learn to recognise their own name before almost anything else, and "Arthur" is one that sticks.

If at home he is mostly Archie, you can choose which form appears in the story. Some families keep Arthur on the cover and let the characters call him Archie inside, the way friends would.

There is also something quietly satisfying about the contrast. Every Arthur grows up hearing about a king who was famous long before him; a book where he is the one on the cover, with his own face and his own friends, turns that around. For once the legend is the side character and the boy is the hero.

Where the name Arthur comes from

Nobody knows for certain where Arthur began, which is rather fitting for a name tied to a legend. The two explanations most often given both point back to early Britain. One links it to the old Celtic word for a bear — "arth" in Welsh still means bear today — so Arthur would be a bear-strong name. The other traces it to Artorius, a Roman family name that could have reached Britain during Roman times.

What is certain is how the name spread. Early Welsh poems and chronicles mention a war leader called Arthur, and in the twelfth century Geoffrey of Monmouth turned him into a great king in his history of Britain. Medieval writers in France and England then added Camelot, the knights, Guinevere and the quest for the Grail. By the time Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte d'Arthur in the fifteenth century, Arthur was the most famous king who may never have existed.

As a name for real boys, Arthur rose and fell with the legend's popularity. It was a favourite of the Victorians, who adored all things Camelot, then slipped out of fashion for much of the twentieth century and began to sound like a great-grandfather's name. Over the last couple of decades it has come roaring back, and in recent years Arthur has sat among the most popular boys' names in England and Wales. Today it manages to sound both classic and fresh at the same time.

The name travels well, too. In France he is Arthur with the stress at the end, in Italy and Spain Arturo, in Poland, Germany and Scandinavia often Artur — handy if Arthur has family abroad.

The bear meaning is a nice detail to tell a child: it gives Arthur a ready-made animal to love. A teddy bear tucked into the story or a line about bears in the dedication suddenly means something — bear-strong Arthur and his bear make an easy pair. And because the name has been carried by kings, writers, inventors and grandfathers alike over the centuries, it never feels tied to one era or one kind of boy. A quiet, bookish Arthur and a muddy-kneed football-mad Arthur both wear it equally well.

Archie, Artie and other ways to call Arthur

  • Arthur — The full name — good for the book cover, for school registers and for the moment in the story when the hero needs to sound serious.
  • Archie — The cheerful everyday form many families use. Strictly speaking it began as a short form of a different name, but today it is a very common nickname for Arthur and suits a lively little boy.
  • Artie — Soft and affectionate, often what grandparents and younger siblings land on. Lovely for the characters closest to him in the story.
  • Art — Short and slightly grown-up. Older boys often pick it themselves; in a story it works well for a teammate shouting across the pitch.
  • Arty — A playful spelling of the same sound, more of a family joke than a name for the cover.
  • Sir Arthur — Not a nickname exactly, but which Arthur hasn't been knighted at least once with a wooden spoon? A fun way for a character in the book to address him.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction

Yes. You type the name you want when you create the hero, so the book can be for Arthur, for Archie, or use Arthur on the cover and Archie in the dialogue — whichever he actually answers to.
