A made-to-measure book

From Georgian princess to flying pioneer: a storybook for Amelia

Amelia has spent two and a half centuries on British birth certificates, from a king's youngest daughter to a whole generation of 2010s babies. Here she gets a story of her own — her name on the cover, her face in the pictures, and Millie whenever the story feels cosy.

Here's how a book for Amelia could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

Why a book with Amelia on the cover

Amelia is a name with a lot of rhythm: four syllables, stress on the second — a-MEE-lee-a — and a soft open ending that carries well when read aloud. That makes it a pleasure in a story. A sentence such as "Amelia held the map tighter" has a lilt that a one-syllable name simply cannot give, and it sounds just as natural whispered at bedtime as it does shouted across a mountain valley in the middle of an adventure.

Because the story is written directly in English, Amelia is not a label pasted into a fixed template. The narrator can call her Amelia at the big moments and slip into Millie when a friend hugs her or a fox sniffs at her hand — the same way most families switch between the full name and the pet name without thinking about it. And since the illustrations are built from one photo you upload, the girl on the cover is recognisably her, not a stock character who happens to share her name.

There is one more practical reason. Amelia has been one of the most common girls' names in Britain for years, so many children called Amelia share their name with someone in their class. A book where Amelia is unmistakably the hero — with her own face, her own friends and her own pet in the story — is a small way of saying this one is hers.

Where the name Amelia comes from

Amelia grew out of the old Germanic element amal, meaning work or labour, which turned up in medieval names such as Amalberga and Amalasuntha. Over time it came to be read as "industrious" or "striving", and in the later Middle Ages it blended with the Latin Emilia, from the Roman family name Aemilius, often linked to aemulus — eager, rivalling. Amelia sits right where those two roots meet, which is why both meanings are quoted for it.

In England the name arrived with the House of Hanover in the eighteenth century. Princess Amelia, daughter of George II, carried it at court, and later Princess Amelia, the youngest child of George III, became a favourite of her father; her early death in 1810 is often said to have deepened the king's illness. Henry Fielding gave the name to the heroine of his 1751 novel Amelia, a portrait of a patient, loyal wife that helped make it feel English rather than imported.

In the twentieth century the most famous bearer was Amelia Earhart, the American aviator who in 1932 became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic — and who gave the name an adventurous edge it has kept ever since. In England and Wales, Amelia climbed steadily through the 2000s and was the most popular girls' name for five years running in the early 2010s; it has stayed close to the top of the national list since. So a little Amelia today carries a name that is both classic and very much of her own generation: her great-great-grandmother might have known an Amelia from a Victorian novel, while her own classmates know several from the playground. Few names manage to feel royal, literary and adventurous all at once.

Nicknames and ways to say Amelia

  • Millie — The best-loved British short form, taken from the middle of the name. Warm, playful and the one most families reach for at home — and the one the story can use in its gentlest moments.
  • Amy — Built from the opening sound. A little more grown-up and tidy; popular at school and often chosen by Amelia herself once she gets older.
  • Mimi — A toddler's version that tends to start with siblings who cannot yet manage four syllables, and then sticks for years as a pet name.
  • Melia — Drops just the first letter and keeps the musical part. Rarer, which is exactly why some families like it.
  • Amelia in full — Kept for serious moments, birthday cards and, inevitably, being called in from the garden. In the book it is the name on the cover and in the title.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
