A made-to-measure book
Oscar means “deer friend” — a name that already sounds like a story
Oscar comes from old Irish legend, crossed into Scandinavian royalty and became one of the most loved boys' names in Britain. Put it on the cover of a book where he is the hero — whether he answers to Oscar, Ozzy or Oz.

Why a book with Oscar on the cover
Oscar is a name with built-in drama. Two strong syllables, a crisp “sk” in the middle and an ending that lands firmly — it is the sort of name a narrator can call out across a forest clearing or whisper at the moment the hero finds the hidden door. It also carries a famous echo: the golden statuette handed out every year in Hollywood is nicknamed the Oscar, so a boy called Oscar has spent his whole life hearing his name next to the word “winner”.
In a personalised book, that name is printed on the cover and woven into every page of the story, written straight in English rather than translated, so it sits naturally in every sentence. When the dragon asks who dares enter the cave, the answer is Oscar. When the friends cheer at the end, they cheer for Oscar. And if at home he is really Ozzy, you can choose the form he actually hears every day — the book should sound like your family, not like a register at school.
There is one more fitting detail. The name's oldest meaning links it to deer and to friendship, which is why one of the covers above shows a boy crouching beside a young deer at the edge of the woods, and another shows him with his arm around a friend. For an Oscar, those scenes are not random — they are what his name has meant for well over a thousand years.
Where the name Oscar comes from
Oscar is usually traced to Old Irish, where os means “deer” and cara means “friend” — so the name is often read as “deer friend” or “friend of the deer”. Some scholars also point to an Old English or Norse root meaning “god's spear”, so the name can be read either as gentle or as heroic, and both suit a storybook.
In Irish legend, Oscar is a young warrior of the Fianna, celebrated for his courage and loyalty — one of the bravest figures in the old tales of Fionn's band. The name reached a wider European audience in the 1760s, when James Macpherson published his famous Ossian poems, which were read across the continent. Napoleon was such an admirer that he chose the name for his godson, who later became King Oscar I of Sweden. That is how a hero of Irish myth ended up on the Swedish throne, and why Oscar is still a familiar name across Scandinavia today.
In the English-speaking world the name is tied above all to the writer Oscar Wilde, whose father, steeped in Irish folklore, gave him the name of the legendary warrior. Wilde wrote fairy tales for his own sons — The Happy Prince and The Selfish Giant among them — so the name has a long and very literal connection to children's stories.
After decades of being thought of as an old-fashioned, Victorian-sounding choice, Oscar came back strongly at the turn of the millennium. Through the 2010s it was regularly among the most popular boys' names in England and Wales, and it remains a familiar name in British classrooms today — classic but friendly, grand on paper and easy to shout across a playground.
Ozzy, Oz and other ways to say Oscar
- Oscar — The full name — what goes on the birthday cake, the school register and, of course, the cover of the book.
- Ozzy — The most common nickname in Britain: bouncy, cheeky and fond. It is the name many families use day to day, and it works brilliantly as the hero's name inside an adventure.
- Oz — Short and punchy, often used by friends and older siblings. It also brings a wink to the Land of Oz — and in L. Frank Baum's books, the Wizard's own first name turns out to be Oscar.
- Ossie — A softer, more old-fashioned diminutive, popular with grandparents and especially affectionate for babies and toddlers.
- Osh / Oshy — A newer family nickname that grew out of how little siblings tend to pronounce the name; very much a home-only form.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is beautiful and my granddaughter is happy with it.
We are satisfied, my little boy really liked the book too. :)
The book and the audiobook are both great. Minor imperfections were willingly and immediately fixed to my satisfaction. I will definitely buy another one, and I have also recommended it to others..
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.
