A made-to-measure book

A storybook for Charlie, the nickname that outgrew Charles

Charlie began life as the friendly short form of Charles and ended up as a name parents choose on its own. A personalised book lets that easy, open sound do what it does best — get called out across every page of an adventure.

Here's how a book for Charlie could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

Why Charlie suits a story so well

Some names feel made for being shouted from the top of a hill or whispered at bedtime, and Charlie is one of them. Two light syllables, the stress landing firmly on the first, and an open "-ee" at the end that carries — it is a name you can call across a playground and a name a dragon or a lost deer in a story can say without sounding stiff. That matters in a picture book, where the hero's name turns up on almost every spread.

There is also the shape of the title. "Charlie and the…" is one of the most recognisable patterns in British children's books, so a cover that reads Charlie and the Rocket on the Silent Plain feels instantly like a proper storybook rather than a novelty. For a boy who already hears his name in songs, cartoons and the radio alphabet, seeing it printed in big letters above a picture of himself is a different kind of thrill: this time the Charlie in the story really is him.

Because the story is written for him, the name is used the way his family actually uses it. If he is Charlie at home but Charles on the school register, the book can stay with Charlie — the version that belongs to bedtime, not to the classroom.

Where the name Charlie comes from

Charlie is the English pet form of Charles, which goes back to the old Germanic word karl, meaning "man" and, in many readings, "free man". Through the Frankish emperor Charlemagne — Carolus Magnus, Charles the Great — the name spread across Europe, and it reached Britain as a royal name, carried by Charles I, Charles II and, in our own time, King Charles III.

For centuries Charlie was purely a nickname: a Charles would be called Charlie by friends and family while the full name went on the paperwork. Scotland gave the diminutive one of its most famous bearers in Bonnie Prince Charlie, Charles Edward Stuart, whose story still runs through Jacobite songs today. In the twentieth century the short form became a household word through comedians, cartoon characters and footballers, and the line between nickname and given name quietly disappeared.

From the 1990s onwards more and more parents in England and Wales began registering Charlie as the full name on the birth certificate, and over the last fifteen years or so it has been a regular in the upper reaches of the boys' rankings. It is also used for girls, which gives it a relaxed, unfussy feel — but on a boy it tends to read as warm, cheeky and approachable rather than formal. Parents who pick it often say they wanted something with the history of Charles without the starched collar.

One small curiosity: Charlie is the word for the letter C in the NATO phonetic alphabet, so pilots, sailors and soldiers say it hundreds of times a day. Few names have that kind of everyday presence.

Forms of Charlie and when they are used

  • Charlie — The everyday form and, for many boys today, the full registered name. Friendly at home, perfectly fine at school and on a book cover.
  • Charles — The formal root. Some Charlies are Charles on paper and only hear it on the register, at weddings or when they are in trouble.
  • Charley — An older spelling of the same nickname, seen in Victorian and early twentieth-century records and still chosen now and then for a vintage look.
  • Chaz / Chas — A breezier short form that tends to appear among friends as boys get older; Chas is also the classic written abbreviation of Charles.
  • Chuck — The American nickname for Charles. Heard in films and on TV, but rarely used in Britain except as a joke.
  • Charlie boy / Champ Charlie — Affectionate family versions — the kind of thing a grandparent says, and the kind of tone a bedtime story can pick up.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
